1.0 RiverWare Viewer Release Contents

RiverWare runs on a Sun Solaris workstation with Solaris 2.7 or higher operating system and on Windows NT, Windows 2000, or Windows XP. Solaris release and Windows release each include its own set of release files. These files are described in the following section, 1.1 Solaris Platform and 1.2 Windows Platform.

RiverWare Release files for both Solaris version and Windows version are available for downloading from the CADSWES website and FTP site.

RiverWare online help files are written in PDF format. Therefore, Acrobat Reader from Adobe is required for viewing those online help files. Adobe Acrobat Reader is free, and freely distributable, software that lets you view and print Portable Document Format (PDF) files. It is available for downloading from Adobe's website www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html . To install it on your system, follow Adobe's installation instructions.

1.1 Solaris Platform

When downloading a RiverWare Solaris release from the CADSWES website, all of the RiverWare release files are compressed into one install file. Therefore, you need to download only one file. While downloading a RiverWare Solaris release from the CADSWES FTP site, you must download all of the RiverWare release files from the release directory.

Make sure you have a file system with adequate disk space before you start downloading. A complete RiverWare Solaris release files in compressed format is about 32 MB. Installed, uncompressed RiverWare will occupy about 66 MB.

RiverWare Solaris Release Files

Each RiverWare Solaris release contains the following files:

  1. install_guide_solaris.txt
A document in ASCII file format detailing how to install RiverWare on your system.

  2. license_guide.txt
A document in ASCII file format detailing how to install and configure the RiverWare license manager for RiverWare floating licenses.

  3. MANIFEST
An ASCII file which list all the files contained in the tar file for the release. This file is required by install script. It contains six sections:

    1. A line which identifies it as a valid manifest:
      # MANIFEST

    2. A line which describes the version of RiverWare:
      # RiverWare 4.0, rel, solaris (non-debug)
      or
      # RiverWare 4.0, dev, solaris (debug)

    3. The date the release was made:
      # date Sun Aug 2 23:09:21 MDT 1998

    4. One or more lines which identify the pieces of the split, compressed tar file and their checksums:
      #part NNNNN part001
      #part NNNNN part002
      ...

    5. One or more lines which identify the individual files contained in the tar file and their checksums:
      #file NNNNN riverware
      ...

    6. A line which identifies the end of the MANIFEST file:
      # END

  4. riverware_install
A script file for installing RiverWare on your system.

  5. several "part???" files
The pieces of a split, compressed tar file, which comprise the RiverWare executable and the supporting files for the release.

1.2 Windows Platform

When downloading a RiverWare Windows release from the CADSWES website, you will have an option of saving the install file to your filesystem (and install it later) or starting the installation process immediately after the install file is downloaded to your machine. While downloading a RiverWare Windows release from the CADSWES FTP site, you have to execute the downloaded install file to start the installation process.

Make sure you have a file system with adequate disk space before you start downloading. The install file in compressed format is about 24 MB (as of release 4.2). Installed uncompressed RiverWare will occupy about 35 MB.

The two optional Windows applications for RiverWare: ExcelWriter and GPAT, are also available for downloading from the CADSWES website and FTP site.

RiverWare Windows Release Files

Each RiverWare Windows release contains the following files:

  1. Install_guide_windows.txt
A document in ASCII file format detailing how to install RiverWare Windows version on your system.

  2. license_guide.txt
A document in ASCII file format detailing how to set up the RiverWare license manager for RiverWare floating license.

  3. rw??setup.exe
All of the RiverWare release files are compressed into one install file named "rw??setup.exe" or "rw???setup.exe", where ?? or ??? represents the RiverWare release number. For example, rw40setup.exe is the install program for release 4.0, and rw402setup.exe is the install program for patch release 4.0.2.
  • ExcelWriter ExcelWriter is an optional MS Windows-only application for RiverWare.

  • GPAT is an optional MS Windows Excel Add-in application for RiverWare.
  • 2.0 Recommended Directory for Downloading RiverWare

Although it is not required, the following is the recommended directory structure for downloading RiverWare to your machine:
    • We suggest that you store the newly downloaded RiverWare files in a different directory than that of your current RiverWare release. This is to prevent you from having to re-download the RiverWare installation files should the installation fail or be interrupted before it is complete. This also makes installing RiverWare on multiple machines more convenient.

    • CADSWES will notify you of the new RiverWare version number and the release type (i.e., rel, patch, or dev) when a release is available. Create a directory parallel with your current RiverWare release directory, and name it: RiverWare-<release number>-<release type>. Store the downloaded RiverWare files in this directory before you begin installation. For example, the downloaded files for an official 4.0 release can be in the following directory:

      on Solaris platform:
      /usr/local/RiverWare-4.0-rel

      on Windows platform:

      C:\Program Files\CADSWES\RiverWare-4.0-rel
    • You may delete the downloaded RiverWare files (the files in the directory: RiverWare-<release number>-<release type>) if you wish after the new version is successfully installed.

    4.0 Installing the RiverWare Viewer

After performing the steps listed in section 3.0, the next step is to install RiverWare on your local system. You should have a copy of a RiverWare release on your local system.

For the Solaris version of the RiverWare Viewer, two installation files are provided as part of the RiverWare release and can be found in the directory where you downloaded RiverWare. The two files are: a script file named "riverware-install," which automatically installs RiverWare on your system, and a document named "install_guide_solaris.txt," which has detailed instructions for installing RiverWare and for setting up your environment to run RiverWare. This document can also be found on CADSWES website: RiverWare Viewer Installation Guide (Solaris Platform).

For the Windows version of the RiverWare Viewer, two installation files are provided as part of the RiverWare release and can be found in the directory where you downloaded RiverWare. The two files are: an install file named "rw[release_number]setup.exe," which automatically installs RiverWare on your system, and a document named "install_guide_windows.txt," which has detailed instructions for installing RiverWare and for setting up your environment to run RiverWare. This document can also be found on CADSWES website: RiverWare Viewer Installation Guide (Windows Platform).

Before running the RiverWare Viewer, you need to obtain a RiverWare license file named "cadswes.lic" from CADSWES. Also, depending on your license type, you may need to start the RiverWare license manager daemon before you can run RiverWare. A document named "license_guide.txt," which has detailed instructions for setting up the RiverWare license manager, can be found in the subdirectory named "license" from where you have installed RiverWare. (This document can also be found on CADSWES website: RiverWare Viewer License Manager User's Guide).
